Telescoping & Locking Mechanisms

Custom telescoping feel, five locking options, and retention on every pole.

A telescoping pole is judged on three things: how smoothly it slides, how securely it locks and how strong it is. Upsilon turns the feel into adjustable parameters with phosphor bronze spring clips and precision-drawn tubes, adds five locking options and a retention feature, and adjusts and inspects every pole before it ships.

Feel: How Smoothly It SlidesChoosing an Alloy

Feel comes from the spring clips inside and how they fit against the tube wall. Some poles wobble from day one or loosen after a few uses; we make the feel controllable and adjustable.

Why phosphor bronze spring clips

The spring clips are the hardest-working parts of a telescoping pole: every extension and retraction flexes them. Phosphor bronze resists wear, keeps its spring and does not rust. Tested over 100,000 cycles, it holds its tension through repeated use. Test report available.

Aluminum and carbon fiber: an extra plastic clip

Plastic spring clips work alongside the phosphor bronze clips to protect the tube wall, for a smoother, quieter slide.

Starting force

Per section

Adjustment

500–3,000 g (1.1–6.6 lb) for the whole pole

Stainless steel and brass from about 500 g (1.1 lb); aluminum from about 800 g (1.8 lb)

Each extra section adds about 200–300 g (0.4–0.7 lb), for example 500 g, then about 700 g, then about 900 g. The more sections, the tighter the last one. This is physics, so sections cannot be set individually

Starting force and overall feel can be loosened or tightened as a whole, fine-tuned on samples

Tell Us Four Things, and Leave the Feel to Us
Choosing an Alloy

No numbers needed. We judge from your use case, dial it in at the sample stage, and you fine-tune once you hold the real thing.

01

Horizontal or vertical use?

02

Once extended, does it support, hold a position, or pick things up?

03

Is there load on the tip, such as hooking or hanging, and in which direction?

04

Feel preference: opens with a light one-hand pull, stays put overhead, easy to use with gloves?

Locking: How Securely It HoldsChoosing an Alloy

Different uses call for different locks, and we recommend a combination for your product. Reference products are only there to help you picture the mechanism.

Friction-fit

Spring clips inside hold the section by friction, so it stops at any length. The most basic and widely used option, common on thin-wall stainless and brass.

Reference: BBQ fork

Internal twist lock

Twist the tube itself to lock the length. Small diameters use eccentric tubing; larger ones use round or inner-ribbed tubing.

Reference: selfie stick

External twist lock

Twist an external locking collar to set the length. Strong holding force, well suited to vertical support.

Reference: tent pole

Push-button (ball-detent) lock

Press the button and it springs into the next hole, locking at set positions. For products that need fixed lengths.

Reference: trekking pole

Flip lock

An external lever opens and closes in one move. For frequent adjustment and use with gloves; common on aluminum, round or slotted.

Reference: tripod

Retention: on every poleI

During tube processing we add a rolled groove, dimples or a rolled edge, so a section cannot pull out under force and the tube mouth will not cut a hand on retraction. Retention is not a lock but a safety baseline added to any locking method, built into every pole and checked on every pole.

Strength: How Much It Can TakeChoosing an Alloy

Strength depends on how the pole is loaded: pulled, pressed, bent sideways or dropped in water.

Pull-out and load

Pulled along its length, about 30 kg (66 lb) will not pull the sections apart; a complete pole carries about 20–100 kg (44–220 lb), depending on material, diameter and locking method

Long-pole straightness

To reach out several meters horizontally without sagging, material, wall thickness and diameter must be matched. If you need this, tell us at the start

Floating

Aluminum poles can be built to float: buoyancy comes from the internal parts and structure, so the pole stays afloat in a pool, lake or the sea. Aluminum Tubing

Scope

Mechanical telescoping only (spring clips and locks); hydraulic, pneumatic and electric telescoping are not supported
